Champions Day is the richest race day in the country, with over £4 million in prize money up for grabs across seven races.

The 2:45 Fillies & Mares Stakes is one of five Group 1 contests on the card, offering more than £300,000 to the winner. Run over 1 mile 4 furlongs, it’s restricted exclusively to fillies and mares.

Looking at course form, three runners in the field have previously won at Ascot: Kalpana, who has one win from three starts and has placed in all her runs here; Bedtime Story, who is unbeaten at the track after a nine-and-a-half-length demolition at Royal Ascot last year; and Ballet Slippers, who also boasts a course victory.

The Good ground shouldn’t inconvenience any of the field, but the standouts under similar conditions are Estrange and Quisisana, who are both two from two and unbeaten on comparable going.

Fewer runners are proven over the 1m4f trip — only Kalpana, Estrange, Quisisana, and Latakia have recorded wins at the distance. Waardah, One Look, and Ballet Slippers are all untested over this trip.

Topping our THM Score last time out is One Look, who posted 828 at Longchamp earlier this month. However, that race was two furlongs shorter and run on much softer ground than she’ll encounter tomorrow.

Next best come Kalpana, Estrange, and Wemighttakedlongway, who all posted identical scores of 822 last time out. The key is to compare the conditions under which those figures were achieved:

Kalpana – 1m4f on Very Soft at Longchamp

Estrange – 1m4f on Good To Firm at York

Wemighttakedlongway – 1m2f on Very Soft at Longchamp

We also can’t overlook the 853 posted by Kalpana at Royal Ascot earlier this year, when finishing second by a length to Calandagan. That performance — over course, ground, and distance — remains the best piece of form in this field.

In terms of trainer statistics, there’s little to separate the leading yards at Ascot over the past 12 months. John & Thady Gosden top the table with a 17% strike rate, represented tomorrow by Danielle. The biggest question mark surrounds David O’Meara, trainer of Estrange, who has sent out 44 runners at Ascot in the last year with just one winner.
